After a long day I can always be assured of prompt friendly service with great food. Once again I was absolutely satisfied. Offered a cool drink while I waited I chose a glass of wine in their newly renovated lounge overlooking the Columbia. On a whim I ordered the salt and pepper calamari. It was fabulous. We seem to order the same thing every time Hawaiian chicken is my go to. A wonderful lunch buffet or dinner.

I had the vegetarian lo mein, fried rice, and egg roll. The food and service was excellent! The food was fresh and hot. I will definitely be back, when I'm in the area again. I highly recommend this place.

Attention people of Yelp! You're on a nice, pleasant drive aside the stunning views of the Columbia river. Suddenly, you realize your tummy is a-rumblin'. As you drive down the 35 you will undoubtedly see the giant panda statue and the glowing sign of "China Gorge". People of Yelp, I encourage you to not write this glorious gem off. It's unassuming, yet comical, nature is just part of its charm. Inside, when offered a booth or a table, I recommend choosing the booth for it's diner-esque atmosphere and top-knotch tunes you'll hear while you dine. What is even more appealing is the weekend-inclusive lunch specials. All for less than $10 you receive a main dish, fried rice, and soup or an egg roll. Again, people of Yelp. Satisfy your taste buds and your wallet at China Gorge.

I've been eating here for over 25 years. I love it that many of the people there are very long term employees. Hi Mary! Excellent food. Reasonable prices. Very nice Sunday buffet.

Hard to believe some of the best hot and sour soup was found in Hood River. It isn't gloppy and full of corn starch like every other Chinese restaurant. Unfortunately I live in Seattle and so I never get to have it. The world would be a much better place if all the sweet and sour soup was made this way. Oh and their Walnut Shrimp rocks too!

Being a local I do not eat here enough, food was great, lemon chicken was glazed but still crispy, waitress never asked for drink refills until we were done eating though. Overall a good experience, food was hot and fresh

Recently tried China Gorge for the first time with my family and we were blown away by the exceptional service. The owner was patient when dealing with a large family trying to order over the phone, had nothing but kindness to offer. When we sat down to eat, we were incredibly satisfied with the quality of food. Everything was rich in flavour and texture. I highly recommend coming here whether you are in need of hearty comfort food or a light meal.

Disappointing. The food was mediocre, at best. The prices are too high. The staff is friendly and locals seem to enjoy it.

This is my second time here. I had the Kung Pow Chicken (again) and it was soooooo good. Tasted fresh but they could have put fewer peanuts on top. Husband had the broccoli beef and it was so flavorful. I've not had a bad experience there yet. Will be back for sure.

Consistently great food and great personalized service. My business travel takes me to Oregon several times a year and I make the drive to Hood River just for the General Tso's chicken (and of course other great stuff). The place is lively - super clean, and the people there are very nice and accommodating. They let me take a table to wait for my friend, and even brought a sample appetizer to me. The fried wontons and dumplings are really choice. In fact, I usually use Mustard on dumplings but these were very flavorful and didn't need it. I must say that if you are a buffet hound, I can't comment. Because I order off the menu. But it did look good - and again, clean and fresh, not wilting under lights. I've looked at the other reviews and can understand that the other diner's experiences were different. I've been to the restaurant three different times and had a consistent experience each time. If you reserve a 5 star rating to a high end gourmet experience or to a place with great fanfare, such as a trumpeters and a flower petal processional with champagne fountains and doves - get real. This is a family owned Chinese restaurant in Hood River. And that's adding the pleasant surprise factor to the equation as well - who'd a thunk this type of sophisticated Chinese food would come out of a pit-stop in the gorge? Go - you'll walk out full and satisfied.

This place blew my mind! By far the best Chinese food I have ever had this is a must try!

I stopped in here today to get a quick late lunch, after working on a wedding near Mt. Hood. The service was great for a Chinese restaurant. I ordered the Moo Goo Gai Pan, which is a mild garlicky white sauce dish with chicken breast and veggies. I liked it. The hot and sour soup that came with my meal was tasty too. This place has gotten some poor reviews, I only tried one dish - so it's hard for me to give it a fair and complete review. But from my experience today, I would return and eat there again.

I am really surprised at the number of mediocre reviews. The buffet is not remarkable, but it is good. There are some really nice choices. Aside from the buffet, the dishes are really special. There is a good size menu so you should be able to find something you want. There is always a big specials board in front. They have comfy seating and it is always clean and nice. They have a busy take out business as well. Some of my personal favorites are the spicy green beans, the calamari, the soups, and some of the specials. The platters (like the family style with a few different kinds of chicken) are great for groups. You get a good quantity of very good food for a very reasonable price. The owners and the wait staff are excellent - always very attentive and they know the menu. They have a low turnover so they obviously are treating their staff right.

The place was pretty busy for an early dinner on a Sunday night and it seemed to be mainly locals, not just people coming off Hood like us. The first thing that will strike you about China Gorge is how brightly lit is. Like, hey half our operating costs go to PG & E bright. We ordered fried wontons, mandarin beef and minced chicken in lettuce cups. The wontons made us giggle. Each one was a huge square, about the size of two playing cards, with 1/8 of a teaspoon of pork filling inside - and not even in the middle. Big pieces of fried dough, but who doesn't like fried dough, right? Next came the entrees. I gagged a little when I saw the beef. I think they use paste, not cornstarch, as the primary thickener and it was absolutely drowning in sauce. The individual pieces of meat were huge, but the portion itself was small, once I scraped off some sauce it took four bites just to polish off a piece. I think two pieces was all I managed, the burgundy-ish color of the paste sauce was so off-putting. The minced chicken arrived fried, which surprised me. I thought it would be grilled or even poached, then minced, more like larb. While not as bad as the beef it was still meh. The hoisin sauce that came with it was cloying and overpowered everything. We weren't expecting authentic but for the prices (think ~$12-15 for basic entrees like sesame chicken) we were expecting quantity and at least Panda Express level of "quality." Dinner was $36, including tip, without any booze and one soda. If it was $25 or less, China Gorge could be slightly closer to the three star mark. Extra star is for genuinely friendly service but definitely keep driving if you're famished after a day on the hill.

It was getting late and I stopped here randomly for dinner. The service wasn't totally on top of it, but they were very friendly! The food was prepared very quickly, and the shrimp lo mein was really good! It was busy, even though it was a Thursday, which was impressive. It wasn't anything overly impressive, but the food was good, the servers were friendly, and it had a very inviting atmosphere.

  • Kimberly E.

The food was ok nothing special. The "buffet" weak! It had about 4-5 entrees to choose from 2 types of chicken 2 types a rice and I think I saw some pop suckers at the end of the table. Overall Chinese food in hood river isn't anything to look forward too

Grace Su's is often a "destination" when we take a drive out the Columbia Gorge. Why? It's been consistency good. I almost always order a bowl of Hot & Sour Soup. It is quite good; usually with enough "tang" to make my taste buds twang. And I'm quite fond of their Moo Goo Gai Pan -- thing sliced chicken breast with vegetables. A restaurant's "Moo Goo" is a good test of how fresh their chicken is; Grace's is clean, with a fresh smell. And, they use fresh vegetables -- not the cheap frozen "peas and carrots" filler used by low class establishments. Sweetie got her favorites: Egg Drop Soup and a combination plate with fried shrimp and other delights. Sorry, I can't remember the name. In all another delicious repast -- probably the 12th time we've visited in the last five years.

My family and I ate at this restaurant 6 years ago and we were very impressed with the quality of the food but the place was very outdated.Six years later we are in town for a week and my family wont stop talking about going to China Gorge for dinner. So I yelped it only three stars?I held my family off for a few more days.I gave in and it was incredible . The place had all new decor the service was great .The service was so amazing and the food was fresh and very tasty .We ate at three of the major brew pubs and it took 10 minutes min just to get a beer in a place that brews its own in house? China Gorge less than a minute!Very fair pricing for the quality. We are going back tonight and I will update if needed.

I have been here for the lunch buffet and dinner. The lunch is good, but they tend to run out. I am not to fond of dinner. The meals are okay, decent. I enjoy the Hood River Restaurant much better.

I've never actually eaten inside the restaurant. I only get take-out. There is something about Chinese food that says, "don't eat me in the restaurant." But that's just me. I've had their veggie dish and their spicy bean curd dish. Both are very passable. A little on the salty side but it's Chinese food! And they have brown rice which is a nice touch. The bean curd has quite a few mushrooms in it which I like and the veggie dish is also pretty tasty. And there is A LOT of food. One order lasts me two-to-three days. All in all, decent Chinese food and the wait staff is always friendly-- over the phone and in person. My suggestion would be to get take-out though. Chinese food belongs in containers, not on plates.

I went here a few months ago with Kade M., and I have to disagree with her rating. I thought the food was excellent, some of the best I've had in the Portland area. Yeah, it's pretty Americanized Chinese food, but it wasn't over-salted and everything wasn't drowning in gooey sauce like so many other places (though the beef did have quite a bit of sauce on it). They were friendly, we were seated and served pretty quickly, the prices were reasonable (I certainly don't remember them being $12-15 for an entree! More like $8-10), and the portion sizes were good.

Tasty food. Good prices. My wife did not like the first glass of wine she ordered and the waitress gladly brought her a new one with no charge. The staff was friendly throughout.

This place had great Chinese food even for vegetarians. Everytime I go to the fruit loop or the gorge, I stop here to have me fill. My kids love their egg-flower soup while my husband and I enjoy their calamari and eggplant in garlic sauce. Their chow main has just the right amount of fried noodles unlike some places that have too much crispy noodles toping their plate. Their portions are quite big and filling (I've only been there for dinner times). They have a little fish tank that my kids enjoy looking at. The service at Su's was timely and who but Grace herself came and checked if we were doing alright at our table. She was also kind enough to honor and combine some offers for being loyal customers. thanks Grace!!! There's only very very few Chinese places I love in the US and yours in one of them.

I am not even going to try and compare this place to the real deal, but for its location in small hood river, it did well to satisy a craving for Chinese food. The Ma Po tofu was respectable and so was the candied walnut shrimp. Lemon chicken was so so, and the big fail was the pork green beans (tasted like soap). I liked the unlimited refills of soda and attentive service.

Be sure to get their cold steamed chicken with ginger sauce. It's one of the best meals in The Gorge. They only carry it in the summer time, but if you push, they can improvise off season.

Having been to Hong Kong and Kowloon. . . I thought this place was very good. The Shrimp Lo Mein is tasty and the portions are big.

The prices at China Gorge are way too high for the quality of food. First of all, we ordered a fairly common chicken dish, sesame chicken. The sauce used on the dish was pretty tasty, but it was covered in a layer of sesame seeds, and the chicken they used was not very good quality. They used chicken thighs that were not even cut up into bite sized chunks before they fried them. That is unusual for a chinese place. We also ordered chicken lo mein. This was very average lo mein which I feel I could have made just as good at home (I am travelling or else I would have). Mediocre food is one thing, but to charge the same amount I'd pay at a much nicer place made me resent it even more.

So much oil coated the inside of the take out carton it made me wish my truck ran on biodiesel.I ordered General Tsao's Chicken. It was whole chicken breast halves.WTF?I thought that the fact that they did not give me chop sticks kind of sucked but what I really needed was a knife. The pork fried rice was pretty bland. They only gave me 1 soy sauce packet, I usually don't use it but that rice needed something. I had the Minced Chicken Lettuce Wraps which were good they just were greasy as all hell. Lettuce was fresh though.

Awesome food, lots of veggie choices. Loved the crispy eggplant I ordered. The restaurant looks a bit rundown from the outside, but the interior is really new and well maintained. Service is great and portions are moderate. They also have lots of dessert options. I had the coconut icecream and loved it.

We stopped in after a wedding in dire need for some filling chinese food! I ended up ordering (can't remember the name) some hot sticky buns stuffed with bbq pulled pork. It was displayed very interestingly and the flavor was wonderful. Then we decided to split one of their two person meals which equaled out to be about the same cost as ordering separately. We ordered the three flavor chicken dish. It came out on a HUGE platter and was decorated nicely with oranges and other veggies. Everything tasted good and the general tsao's chicken even came out in large pieces, about double or triple the normal size. The only things that could have improved our overall experience was, I did find myself wishing they had served hot & sour or egg flour soup with the meal, we should have had some chop sticks on our table, and they need a list of beer & wine selection at the table. Other than that it was splendid! Oh, and you might need a little patience with the waitress. The one we had was very new.

I visited China Gorge while picking up my college roommate from Hood river. The prices were a bit high for my taste and the food there wasn't really what I expected, but it was still delicious. Any chinese restaurant in which I have to ask for chopsticks makes me wonder... However, I did enjoy myself. All the dishes were great. I really recommend the Chef's noodle special... something like that. It was great, if you're in Hood River and find yourself hungering for some Chinese food head over to China Gorge.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
